‘Reimagining India,’ a video lecture series, hopes to start a conversation to explore the contours of a society that is more just, equal and aligned to the Constitutional values of liberty and fraternity. In this lecture Professor Emerita of History at the Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, Romila Thapar talks about her recent book Voices of Dissent and argues that dissent is central to social and cultural change in a society. She defines dissent as difference of opinion or disagreement that is not arbitrary and explains that dissent introduces alternative ideas both in thought and in practice.

First published in India Inclusive.
Romila Thapar is Professor Emerita of History at the Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. She was elected General President of the Indian History Congress in 1983 and a Fellow of the British Academy in 1999.
