जब इतना सब है, कहने को
जब इतना सब है लिखने को
क्या ज़िद है के ऐसी बात करो
जिस बात में ख़तरा जान का हो

तब समझो , पतझड़ रुत आई
तब समझो मौसम दार का है
तब सहमी, सहमी रूहों को
ये बात बताना लज़िम है

Truth Survives
When the world commands your silence
When the world demands your muteness
When the world insists, the times are bad
When the world objects—
this isn’t the time, to speak of things futile
When they urge you to be sensible
When they urge you to be reasonable
When they urge you to consider that:
the blooming buds are no less
the fragrant flowers are no less
the swaying boughs are no less
the sparkling bindis are no less
the tumbling tresses are no less
the spilling goblets are no less;
When so much awaits to be expressed
When there is so much to write about—
Why then persist with speaking of that
which poses a threat to life?
When the world commands your silence
When the world demands your muteness—
Then know, that fall has arrived.
Then know the season of gallows is here.
Then for shrinking, cowering spirits,
Sharing this truth is urgent
Raising one’s voice is urgent
Paying each debt is urgent.
