Running Bookshops in the Age of Amazon: A Conversation with Rick Simonson
February 19, 2019
Rick Simonson is Head Buyer and Events Coordinator at the Elliot Bay Book Company based in Seattle, USA. Opened over forty five years ago, the bookshop, despite many economic hardships and challenges, today holds a significant position in the local reading community of Seattle. It has contributed to the efforts of bookshops in the US to help each other survive in a world increasingly dominated by online retail giants like Amazon. Bookshops have found that the only way they can take on such corporate giants is by cooperating with each other and sharing knowledge and resources. In this conversation with Ishita Mehta of the Indian Cultural Forum, Simonson talks about some of the major challenges facing bookshops and publishers in US and India.
