As part of their monthly online project showcases, India Foundation for the Arts (IFA) organised a project showcase titled ‘Lokshahir Anna Bhau Sathe and his Loknatya’, a presentation by Milind Champanerkar and a discussion with Sandesh Bhandare, on February 25, 2022 on Zoom and Facebook Live.
Milind received a grant from IFA for a project that explored a crucial question: Can a traditional art form be creatively transformed into a potent tool for political activism? The project examined the transmuted Loknatya form developed by Lok-Shahir Anna Bhau Sathe during the 1940s to the 60s. It enquired into Loknatya’s legacy, probing into the reasons behind its marginalisation as well as exploring the ways in which it inspired many theatre and student movements. The project culminated in a script towards a documentary that Milind will make.
