Wasafiri — “travelers” in Swahili — is a literary magazine that started out as a political magazine focusing on the writings by ethnic minorities settled in the British subcontinent. Over three decades, it has become a magazine of cultural travel, binding together different parts of the world through their stories, poems and artwork. In a conversation with Githa Hariharan, Susheila Nasta, the Editor of Wasafiri, talks about its role in resisting the problem of labeling literature from the ethnic minority groups, and the ghettoising of critical review. Nasta and Hariharan also contextualise the present day situation of writers’ protest in India, by viewing literature as a political force, with the power to bring about a change.
