In this video, author and activist Harsh Mander, while addressing students of Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) University in New Delhi, says that the fight against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) was a fight for three things – for the nation, the Constitution, as also, for “mohabbat” or love. He was speaking at the University on 16th December, Monday, where students were on protest against the brutal violence unleashed on them by Delhi Police the previous day.
On Sunday, students of the Jamia Millia Islamia and local residents of the Jamia area took out a massive “Community March” against the recently passed communal CAA. The march was stopped mid-way by the police, who then proceeded to lathi-charge and fire tear gas shells on the protesters. Later into the evening, police entered the university without permission and tear gassed the students present inside the campus library and mosque. Several campuses and civil society members in the country and outside have erupted in solidarity with the students of JMI since then.
