Infestation

Infestation

Petals stiff, thin, white, and crisp
like project papers of Jal Nigams
with bright red blobs of ink —
the rivers are flooding with those.

Their eyes are closed,
limbs are tied.
They don’t hold anyone accountable
for their plucked breaths.
They don’t get into arguments
over their perceived ill-treatment.
They don’t raise their defiant heads.
They don’t join angry protest marches.

You just need to bury them
ten feet deep into the soil,
wrapped in tight plastic bags
or ornate wooden boxes
until the maggots burrow and eat the petals,
and breed in their still moist caverns.
Or you just hang them in the Dakhma
for carrion birds to feed on.
Or just burn them
stems, leaves, flowers and all
until they all turn to ashes.

But it’s important
that you dispose of them
quickly and correctly,
lest they grow overnight
into an outrageous infestation like this.
Such impurities
and that too in running sacred waters.
Rising from slippery darkness
this wild colony of
white and pink lotuses.
