AIDWA condemns brutal police action inside university campuses

The All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) strongly condemns the barbaric police action unleashed in a number of university campuses, where spontaneous peaceful protests of teachers and students have been going on, first, against unwarranted fee hikes, and more recently, against the unconstitutional Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) enacted by the BJP through its brute majority in the Parliament. After the open violence against peaceful agitations of students and teachers of the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and Delhi University, and brutalities perpetrated on students in Assam, the unauthorized entry of police into the campus of Jamia Milia Islamia (JMI) yesterday, their unprovoked use of lathis, teargas and bullets even within the precincts of the university library and the indiscriminate assault on students, including women, which left many of them severely injured, are but another example of the fascistic force state violence has acquired under the Modi regime. We also condemn the police raid within Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) last night, in which students were forcibly made to leave their hostels and herded off in buses. Early vacations were announced to ensure that they are prevented from any activity inside campus.

AIDWA expresses its solidarity with all the students and teachers courageously standing up against the terror let loose on university campuses to ensure the predatory demolition of the secular and democratic rights inscribed in our Constitution. We call upon all citizens to oppose the undeclared emergency on university campuses and to unite to defend and uphold the basic character of the nation, which is under attack from forces of mindless authoritarianism.
