Sixty three years ago, on 6 December 1956, the first law minister and Constitution-writer, Dr BR Ambedkar, passed away. Yogesh Maitreya, a PhD scholar at TISS, Mumbai, a poet and publisher, tells NewsClick and the Indian Cultural Forum what Dr Ambedkar’s legacy means in 2019. Caste has not been annihilated, as Ambedkar had dreamed, but the tools to conduct this struggle were inherited from him by Dalits everywhere. The burning need today is for other social groups to combine with the Dalits, on the basis of their shared experiences, to wage this struggle against caste oppression together.
