Tapati Guha-Thakurta teaches history at the Centre for Studies in Social Sciences, Kolkata. She has published a detailed account of the Durga Puja festival, celebrated widely across West Bengal and by Bengalis everywhere. In an interview with Newsclick and Indian Cultural Forum, she looks at how the political changes in West Bengal since 2011, and the patronage of the Durga Puja festival by the Trinamool Congress party headed by chief minister Mamata Banerjee, have paved the way for the Bharatiya Janata Party to push for religious nationalism and Hindutva politics in the state. The next Durga Puja in West Bengal will be the site of a big battle between the TMC and the BJP, as both seek to maintain ground or forge a new political win in the state.
