Started in 2011, Voice of Azamgarh Community Radio Station in eastern Uttar Pradesh, has emerged as a voice of underprivileged girls, who are trying to bring holistic development in the society. The FM radio channel broadcasts shows to create awareness regarding different issues, identify local talent, preserve regional culture and empower women.
In addition to using the community radio as a prime medium for dissemination of information, Voice of Azamgarh has also built an online community of conscious citizens with the help of Facebook and Twitter to educate, aware and empower people with information. It is encouraging a problem-solving approach among people.
The radio jockeys – all women from humble family backgrounds – talk about health, hygiene, voters’ rights, democracy, government schemes and other local issues, thus encouraging community dialogue and participation.
