K Hemalata, President of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), said that the trade unions have launched the 3-day mahapadav (mass sit-in) at the Parliament Street in Delhi on a 12-point charter of demands. Curtailing the demands in the charter, such as price rise, strenghtening the public distribution system, employment generation, social security for all, pension for all, and so on are the demands of the entire working class as well as other sections of the common people. But the BJP government has decided to bring into effect four codes, the code of wages, code on industrial relations, code on social security and code on safety at workplaces. These codes would remove whatever benefits the workers were getting under existing laws.
