The practice of "Untouchability" was outlawed in India with the adoption of the Indian Constitution. But this practice is still prevalent and manifests itself in varied forms. Despite education, people still seem to be influenced by notions of purity and pollution. Recently, government officials in Uttar Pradesh handed out soap and shampoo to dalits before the Chief MInister's visit to their areas. In this context, Newsclick spoke to Dr. Amit Thorat.
