We present here an extract from Do You Remember Kunan Poshpora?, a collection of perspectives on the horrific night of February 23, 1991, when members of the 4 Rajputana Rifles regiment of the Indian Army gangraped women from the villages of Kunan and Poshpora in Indian Kashmir. The book includes survivor testimonies, medical records, accounts of the police investigation and analysis. The excerpt below contains an introduction to the Zubaan series on sexual violence and impunity in south Asia, by series editors Urvashi Butalia, Laxmi Murthy and Navsharan Singh; a table of contents; the poem “Boonyi Tal” [Beneath the Chinar]; and the preface to the volume, authored by activist and researcher Sahba Husain.
Do You Remember Kunan Poshpora? has been co-edited by Essar Batool, Ifrah Butt, Samreena Mushtaq, Munaza Rashid and Natasha Rather.
