Since 1989, the influential Delhi-based Safdar Hashmi Memorial Trust (SAHMAT) has offered a platform for artists, writers, poets, musicians, actors, and activists to create and present works of art that promote artistic freedom and celebrate secular, egalitarian values in India. SAHMAT has issued statements; organised art exhibits and musical performances, street theatre, rallies and public meetings; published books, calendars and posters; and produced audio and video CDs. Whatever the activity, it has brought together people within the cultural sphere to raise their voices against communalism, violence and inequality, and for secularism and freedom of cultural expression.
